2019 Nobel Prize Winners

The Nobel Assembly announced the 2019 Nobel Prize at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm on October 7. The prize is worth 9 million Swedish kronor ($907,000).

Physiology or Medicine

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Medicine has been jointly awarded to:

  • William G. Kaelin, Jr. (Prize share: 1/3), Harvard Medical School and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, USA.
  • Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe (1/3), the University of Oxford and Francis Crick Institute, UK.
  • Gregg L. Semenza (1/3), Johns Hopkins University, USA.

for their discoveries of “how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.”

The three laureates will share the 9 million Swedish kronor ($907,000) equally.

    for “theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology“.
  • Michel Mayor (1/4), University of Geneva, Switzerland,
    for “the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star“.
  • Didier Queloz (1/4), University of Geneva, Switzerland, and the University of Cambridge, UK, (Born in Switzerland),
    for “the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star“.

  • John B. Goodenough (1/3), University of Texas, USA (Born in Germany).
  • Akira Yoshino (1/3), Asahi Kasei Corporation and Meijo University, Japan.
  • M. Stanley Whittingham (1/3), Binghamton University, State University of New York, USA (Born in the UK).

for “the development of lithium-ion batteries“.

Literature

2018 and 2019 Nobel Prize in Literature

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to:

  • Peter Handke, an Austrian author from France.

for “an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience“.

And the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to:

  • Olga Tokarczuk, Polish author.

for “a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life“.

Olga Tokarczuk received her Nobel Prize in 2019.

Peace

The Nobel Peace Prize 2019 has been awarded to:

  • Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

for “his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea“.

  • Abhijit Banerjee, MIT, USA (Born in India).
  • Esther Duflo, MIT, USA (Born in France).
  • Michael Kremer, Harvard University, USA.

for “their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty” .
